Nick J. Soulis, 91, peacefully passed away Friday, October 4, 2013 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown.

     Nick was born on January 10, 1922 in Watertown, SD to John “Pappy” Soulis and Alice (Kimberly) Soulis.  The family moved to Jamestown when Nick was two.  After moving to Jamestown, “Pappy” started up Majestic Lanes, “The Ditch” where Nick spent many hours setting pins and bowling with his brothers and others.

     Nick graduated from high school in 1940; in 1939 he was part of the State Champion Blue Jays basketball team. After high school, Nick attended NDSU until 1942 when he enlisted in the air force.  He became a B-29 pilot and flew missions out of India, China, and Japan.  He was in the air over the battleship Missouri when General MacArthur signed the Peace Treaty.

     After the war, Nick returned to North Dakota and married Lorraine Hanson.  They had two children, Jim and Nicki.  He finished college at NDSU and then coached and taught school in Beulah.  After two years the family returned to Jamestown and Nick began his career with New York Life Ins. Co.  Following a divorce, he married Millie Gallagher; they had one son, Tom.

     Nick remained active in the air force reserves until 1973 when he retired as a lieutenant colonel.  He also remained an active New York Life agent until his late 80’s.  This was over fifty years of service.

     Nick was an active resident of Jamestown all his life serving in Kiwanis, refereeing high school football and basketball games, was an active member of the VFW, the airport board, and a member of the Jamestown Country Club.

     His hobbies included bowling, golfing, watching high school basketball games, and dancing.  Nick bowled an ABC sanctioned 300 game and golfed a hole-in-one.

     Nick is survived by his son, Jim Soulis, Lakewood, CA; daughter, Nicki Soulis, Long Beach, CA; son, Tom (Missy) Soulis, Jamestown; three grandchildren, CJ, Abby, and Hannah; brother, Mike Soulis, Jamestown; and special friend, Vi Podenski, Edgeley.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jake and CJ; and sister, Jean Harr; both wives.

     Memorial Service: 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Jamestown, ND with Pastor Tom Eckstein officiating.

     Prayer Service: 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

     Interment: Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.
