(NewsDakota.com)- The points came in a flurry and then the University of Jamestown had to hold on. In a span of seven minutes the Jimmies scored three touchdowns; on offense, defense and special teams as they took an early lead in their 21-19 win over Mayville St. on Saturday.
The Jimmies scored on a three-yard touchdown run by D’Marco Smith on the second to last snap of the first quarter. Smith finished the day with 107 yards on the ground to lead an improved Jimmies running game.
After the Comets tied it on a Jerril Jenkins acrobatic run, the Jimmies landed on some good fortune. Jamestown scored on special teams when the ball was snapped over freshman punter Dylan Torgeson’s head and JT Petsch fell on it in the end zone.
Just a few plays later, freshman quarterback Robbie Strand tried to cock his arm to throw, but the ball slipped out. As he tried to fall on it, it squirted free right into the arms of Kyle Bonam. Bonam returned it for a touchdown to put Jamestown up 21-7.
The Comets answered back with a pair of touchdowns, the second following a Mike Sena muffed punt. Sena also had a punt return touchdown called back.
Jamestown’s defense held the Comets on a late push to preserve the win.
The Jimmies are now 1-5 on the season after collecting their first win. They will head to Dickinson on Saturday for a match-up with the Blue Hawks. The Hawks are competing for the final year in the Frontier League will join the North Star in 2014-15.
