CITY, N.D (NewsDakota.com) The Hi-Liners tennis team may not have qualified for the state tournament as a team, but they will be represented on the doubles court this coming Friday.
The Duo of Derek Reimers and Dustin Miller, opened doubles play as the eight seed. In order to advance in the regional tournament, they would have to defeat West Fargo. The Duo worked past the Packers in two games with aggressive net play and smart, cross-cout, safe, consistent base-line shots.
Advancing to the next round, Reimers and Miller would have to take on the number one seeded team of Red River in the quarterfinals. Despite a strong effort the Hi-Liners team would lose in two sets, after the Rough Riders took five out of six deuce points.
The loss would mean that Valley City would need a win against Fargo South’s in order to qualify for the state tournament. The Valley City duo would start out sluggish dropping the first set to the Bruins in a 6-3 final. The Hi-Liners refused to be counted out, however, in the second set, Miller and Reimers hit a new gear taking over the match earning a 6-2 victory. The final game, Was once again all Hi-Liners as they toped their opponents, and took the final set with a 6-3 win, earning their spot in the state tournament.
Reimers and Miller would go on to lose once more match to Fargo Shanley in a placing match, but they would defeat Fargo Davies earning the seventh place position for the State Tournament. The doubles team becomes the first Valley City squad to reach state, since 2008, when Aaron Schuldt and Anthony Sommerfeld accomplished the task in 2008.
The Hi-Liners team will return to Fargo October 4th for the State Tournament. The team of Reimer/Miller will take on the two seed in the west, Ben Wanner and Erik Porter of Mandan. Tournament play begins at 1pm this Friday.
