CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) It was a back and forth battle all night between the Vikings and Mayville State at Graichen Gym, but in the end it was the Comets who earned the five game victory.
Valley City State came out strong in the contest earning a first game win 26-24 over the rivals. The second game would be another endurance test, as both teams once again would go into extra points. In the end it would be the Comets on the right side of the scoreboard in a 28-26 win.
After returning from the brake, Mayville state would turn to Josette Glatt, would prove to be a nuisance to the Vikings at the net. The 6’1 Junior had 17 Kills and four blocked shots for Mayville State on the night. The Comets earned the second straight game in a one sided bout with a 25-11 finish. As impressive as the Comets offense was in game three, Valley City showed they could be just as efficient finishing game four with 21 kills. The 25-21 Vikings win forced a final game with Mayville State.
The Vikings took the early lead in the final contest, but Mayville State began to fight back. Despite strong play from Aurissa Martens at the net, who finished the night with a season high 18 kills, the Vikings could not hold off the Comets. Valley city dropped the final game 15-11 to their NSAA rivals.
Alley Theroux tallied 15 kills on the night for the Vikings. Emily Plowman had a strong defensive night pulling out 23 digs in the game.
The loss drops the Vikings to 8-12 on the season with a 1-3 record NSAA play.
The Vikings are on the road in Iowa this weekend, for a Friday and Saturday tournament at Clark University.
