(NewsDakota.com)- For the first time since they did it back-to-back in 2004 and 2005 the Blue Jay football is off to a 3-1 start. Jamestown needed a late scoring drive to beat Devils Lake Friday night at Ernie Gates Field, 24-18.
It was a slow first half as neither team could sustain a drive with the exception of the opening drive when Jamestown went down and Ben Hanson kicked a 35-yard field goal. Hanson’s triple stood up as the only scoring play of the opening half.
In the second half, both offenses found their grove. First Jamestown rattled off a pair of touchdowns to take a 17-0 lead. Taylor Orr scampered in from 37-yards away and Ross Munson punched in a QB sneak.
Credit the Firebirds as they didn’t go quietly, they stormed back with a trio of unanswered touchdowns to take an 18-17 lead. Following the third Devils Lake score, Layne Carlson fumbled the ensuing kickoff giving the Firebirds the ball at the Jays 15-yard line.
Penalties and a one of the six Jamestown sacks of the night pushed Devils Lake into fourth-and-38 when they were forced to punt. That gave the ball back to the Jays with just over four minutes left.
Jamestown marched to the Devils Lake 33-yard line when they stalled for a 4th down and five situation. They rolled the dice and went for the win and cashed in when Munson hit Logan Anderson down the seam and the games deciding score.
Jamestown improves to 3-1 and will head to Bismarck to play Century on Friday.
