Richard “Dick” Winter, age 78, of Valley City, ND, died Friday, September 20th at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, September 24th at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday morning. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City.
Richard E. Winter was born near Cannonball, ND, on January 12, 1935, to Charles A. and Hazel L. (Haney) Winter. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In 1945 he moved with his family to a farm north of Valley City in Getchell Township where he also attended school. He started farming in 1953, at the age of 17. In 1964 he purchased his own farm in Alta Township.
Dick was united in marriage to Kathleen (Kay) Bruns on March 29, 1956. He was an active member of his community. He served in the North Dakota National Guard in Company G, the 141st Engineer Battalion, and the Color Guard. It was with great pride that he carried the American Flag. While serving, he was called to Fargo to help clean up after the tornado of 1956. This event left a lasting impression on him and reaffirmed his strong belief in the importance of helping others.
Dick served on the Alta Township Board, served as president of the Barnes County Township Officers Association, was a member of the Barnes County Crop Improvement Association and a member of the VCSU V-500 Foundation. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and currently attended Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
Dick had been awarded many honors during his farming career including Barnes County Outstanding Young Farmer (1964), Outstanding Young Men of America (1966), Barnes County Soil Conservation Field Windbreak (1971), North Dakota Conservation Achievement Award (1973), North Dakota State University Alumni Association Agriculturist Award (1973). Winter Farms was host to the Barnes County Livestock Picnic in 1976.
Dick started working with the North Dakota Winter Show in 1953, and continued to support the show by volunteering in the crops division and as a member of the NDWS Foundation. In 2006 he was recognized as the North Dakota Winter Show State Crop Show honoree.
He retired from farming in 1997 and was currently living in Valley City, where he thoroughly enjoyed yard work and growing flowers.
Survivors include his wife Kay, four children: Steve (Robin) of Oriska, Dianne (Brad) Graff of Valley City, Deb (Mike) Kimbell of Spearfish, SD, and Mark (Andrea) of Valley City; nine grandchildren: Kylie (Devin) Weber of West Fargo, Colton Winter of Oriska, Leah (Josh) Hoffman of Carrington, ND, Logan Becker of Fargo, Anna and Jesse Kimbell of Spearfish, SD, Brenna, Ellie, and Trevor Winter of Valley City; 3 sisters, Helen Noeske, Charlotte McKay, and Delores Winter all of Valley City, brother-in-law Hank (Sandy) Bruns, sisters-in-law Shirley (Ted) Mahaffey, Delores Winter and Carol Winter-Bjorge; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kay’s parents, 3 brothers: James, William, and infant brother Joseph, 2 brothers-in-law Ralph Noeske and Russell McKay.
Dick was a true steward of the land. He held a deep respect for God’s creations, the renewal of life with the change of the seasons, the beauty of nature, and bringing the harvest home. Dick was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. Above all he loved his family dearly and the strong values that he instilled in them will be carried forward. He was a good friend to many and will be greatly missed.
