CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) There were a few smiles on the faces of Valley City school district officials following the release of the K-12 fall enrollment numbers this week.

Superintendent Dean Koppelman says the district gained one student this year compared to last year’s fall enrollment for a total of 1,096 students. He says hopefully the district will retain that number through the year as funds are tied into a per pupil formula.

North Dakota United President Nick Archuleta says the new school funding formula has created headaches for school districts that lose students. He says the legislature needs to make an adjustment in the funding formula.

Last year the Valley City school district lost 25 students at the end of the year which resulted in a monetary loss of more than $200,000 under the new funding formula approved in the 2013 legislative session.
