CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) On a rainy Saturday night, The Vikings opened up North Star Athletic Association play on their home turf with a 63-20 win over Dakota State.
The Vikings wasted no time getting into the end zone, on the first play of the game freshman quarterback Kurtis Walls found Derek Elliott on a screen pass that went 55 yards for a touchdown. After the score, a botched snap would lead the way to a two point conversion for the Vikings on a pass from Colby Lum to Danny Hangaard. That would be the trend of the night. It seemed VCSU could do no wrong at Shelley Ellig Field. In the first quarter Elliott would score three more times.
The Trojans did not get on the board until the second quarter when Cole Whisenhunt ran the ball into the end zone from two yards out. Shortly after the Trojans score, Valley City would add seven more to their total when Walls hit Lum for a 41 yard touchdown pass.
The Vikings controlled the rest of the game offensively, as Walls finished the contest with 254 yards through the air, and 4 touchdown passes. As impressive as the offense was finishing the game with 508 total yards, the defense was just a tenacious. Dwanye Fearon earned the Vikings lone sack, but he and the rest of the line were in the back field all night rushing Whisenhunt to throw the ball early. The linebacking core was equally as impressive, led by Jake Thurston who returned an interception for a touchdown.
Despite the rain, fans showed up to see the first NSAA game in the history of the new conference and the Vikings made sure they saw a show. The 63-20 victory advances Valley City to 2-1 over all with a 1-0 conference record. The Vikings return home next Saturday, September 21st for a match up with Trinity Bible. You can hear the game on 1490 KOVC starting at 5:30pm.
