CITY, N.D.(NewsDakota.com) On Friday night the Hi-Liners opened league play with a match up against the Grafton Spoilers.

Grafton proved to be exactly that, handing Valley City their second loss of the season at Hanna Field by a score of 30-14.

Valley City was the first to get on the score board when Dustin Lindgren reached the end zone on a two yard run. The Spoilers didn’t need long to answer. On the very next drive, quarterback Hunter Baldwin threw a 15-yard pass intended for Garek Droog. Valley City’s Jack Jenson bated the pass away, but as luck would have it, Grafton’s Zack Hernandez was in the right place at the right time, catching the ball and tying the score at six. Hernandez would then run the ball into the end zone on the two point conversion to give Grafton the lead.

In the second quarter, it was once again Valley City who made their way onto the score board first. This time it was Jon Halgrimson who scored for the Hi-Liners from two yards out. Lindgren would accompany the touchdown with a two point conversion,  putting the VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Hi-Liners out front once again.  It would take Grafton just seconds to answer. On the third play form the line of scrimmage, Baldwin once again found Hernandez for a 40-yard touchdown pass that gave the Spoilers the lead and all the momentum. 

After the half the Grafton came out throwing, leading the opening drive to the two yard line, before Austin Conteras caped it off with a two yard score. The senior wide receiver would score one more time in the fourth quarter making an impressive catch on a ball thrown behind him. The Hi-Liners would not score again, dropping their second game of the season.  

Valley City travels to Whapeton next Friday, September 20^th for an Eastern Dakota Conference match up with Wahpeton. You can hear the game on 1490 KOVC starting at 6:30pm.
