FALLS, S.D. (AP) – Highway Patrol troopers from North Dakota and South Dakota are patrolling Interstate 29 throughout both states in a joint effort to stop criminal activity and reduce traffic crashes. The joint operation is covering I-29 from the Iowa state line to the Canadian border on Friday.

Col. Craig Price, superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol, says the joint effort seeks to make people aware of safe driving practices. He says the presence of troopers often reminds people of the need for safety, without the need for an arrest.

Maj. Michael Gerhart of the North Dakota Highway Patrol says the operation lets people know authorities will not tolerate hazardous traffic violations and criminal activity.

The troopers will emphasize the enforcement of laws dealing with seat belts, speeding and drunken driving.
