CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Valley City State University got the fall golf season underway on Wednesday at the University of Jamestown Open at the Hillcrest Golf Course.

Valley City entered the tournament with two teams on the weekend. Squad one had the best showing finishing the day with two golfers in the top ten. Ben Sorenson and Shane Ost both tallied scores of 76 earning a 8th place finishes.  Those two scores along with Jake Richels (78), Darren Young (79), and Casey Colemer (80) allowed VCSU’s first squad to take a fourth place team finish.

The second team was led by Beau Diegel, he also finished the night tied for 8th place with a 76 in the tournament.  Adding to the team two score were Tyler Stevens (77), Trevor Justensen (77), and Cody Colemer (80) earning the second VCSU team a sixth place finish.  

The Host team, Jamestown, finished the day in third. They were led by Trent Hagenson who finished in second place individually with a 72, just behind Jared Cowden of Minnesota State Community and Technical College of Fergus Falls. Coweden and his teammates  went on to take the team championship scoring a 299 overall.

On the women’s side of the tournament, University of Jamestown freshmen Emily Larson earned the individual championship with an outstanding 79 on the day. The women’s team was split into two squads. Larson and company took the championship, the Jimmies second team took third.  

VCSU brought two members of the Women’s team, Haley Christofferson and Alyssa Tait. Christofferson finished in sixth place shooting a 90, while Tait’s 101 earned her a 11th place finish.
