Gladys Sjostrom, age 93, of Fargo, ND, formerly of Valley City, ND, died Wednesday, August 27th at Villa Maria Care Center in Fargo, ND. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, September 6th , at the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home Chapel in Valley City. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the funeral home on Friday afternoon. Interment will be in Woodbine Cemetery in Valley City.

     Gladys was born on November 27, 1919 at Devils Lake, ND, the daughter of J.C and Ella Hatter of Grand Harbor Township. She was the youngest of six children of this farm family. She attended a small country school and later attended Devils Lake High School where she graduated. She chose teaching as her vocation and graduated from Valley City State Teachers College. Gladys’ first job was her home school, where she enjoyed amenities of a one room country school. She was in charge of tending the coal buckets, getting well water and served as custodian. She was married to Charles Sjostrom of Valley City, ND on December 27,1942. The couple lived their entire married life in Valley City except for a period in WWII while Chuck was in the Navy. Gladys was employed for a time at Lee’s Market and Montgomery Ward’s. She soon returned to her profession and taught at the Ellis Nelson School south of Valley City and also at Oriska. Gladys later became part of the Valley City school system where she taught sixth grade at Jefferson school for 24 years. She was a member and Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Am Vets Auxiliary, the NDEA and the Valley City Country Club. She had won championships in golf and was an expert bridge player, nearly qualified as a Life Master. Gladys adored her two sons Chuck and Jim and their families and never forgot a birthday or special holiday. Gladys was especially pleased by the many greetings she had from so many of her former students throughout the years since she retired. She recalled a memory from the girls who said they came in every morning to see what new nail polish she was wearing. She enjoyed the many years at Jefferson school.

     She is survived by sons Charles (Kathy) Sjostrom, Fargo, ND and James (Connie) Sjostrom, Marion, IA; One grandson, Nate of Denver, CO; three granddaughters, Tara (Robert) Stainton, Vilonia, AR, Danielle (Jon) Eastman of Pullman, WA and Jennifer (Matt) Smiley, Philadelphia, PA; one great-grandson, Milan Stainton of Vilonia, AR; nephews Duane (Lucille) Hatter, Roseburg, OR and Allen (Sherrie) Brundell, Grand Forks, ND; nieces Beverly (Robert) Pearson, Roseburg, OR, Betty Kildea, Everette, WA and Shirley Froehne, Sanwood, WA.

     Gladys was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Charles Sjostrom, Sr.
