City State University had strong representation at the Valley City Town and Country Club Match Play Tournament held over the weekend of August 17th.
All eight competitors in the Championship Flight had ties to the university. The Championship Flight was topped off by Sean Krall who is a golfer at VCSU. In the first quarterfinal Krall posted a three and two defeating VCSU math instructor, Jamie Wirth. In

the second quarterfinal Viking golf coach and instructor, Jamie Paurus, faced off with Jeremy Wiebe, who played baseball for the school and is currently the admissions counselor. Paurus earned the win with a two and one, setting up a Sunday morning match up in the semis with Krall.
The Flight rounded out with current Viking golfers; Ben Sorenson, Travis Ingstad, and Shane Ost, along with former Viking golfer Matt Sorenson. Ost and Ben Sorenson won their respective matches moving on to face each other in the semi-finals. It would be Ben Sorenson who bested Ost earning a spot in the Championship. Shortly after, Krall punched his ticket into the finals with a five and four victory over, Paurus.
In the final match up, Ben Sorenson stayed close to Krall taking the match all the way to
the final hole. It was there that Krall showed why he is a repeat champion, earning his fifth title at the Valley City Town and Country Club by paring the final hole and earning the one up victory.
Krall may have his name engraved on the trophy, but it is VCSU that displayed what it means to be a Viking. With students and instructors playing side-by-side, there is no doubt that the university is about more than just class rooms and school work. It is also about a bond that was on display at its best this weekend during the Tournament.
