(NewsDakota.com) After losing their first game to Beulah last Friday, Valley City would win four in a row, knock four teams out of the tournament and meet Dakota Prairie for the Babe Ruth Championship. The Knights of Dakota Prairie would win three games in a row themselves, get a day off yesterday and advance to the championship.
CHAMPIONSHIP: Dakota Prairie 4 Valley City 3
Valley City would strike first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and another run in the third to take a 3-1 lead going into the seventh inning. Gavin Tweed of Dakota Prairie would retire the side in order in the top of the seventh inning. Dakota Prairie’s Hunter Sand led off the bottom of the seventh with double, then Tyler Gravseth walked. Jon Lund would come up with nobody out and two runners on. Lund would hit a RBI double scoring Sand from second, so Lund represented the winning run at second. After a strikeout and a sacrifice fly scoring a run to tie it, Gavin Tweed would step in.
Tweed would come out swinging on the first pitch, he hit a deep line drive infield grounder, scoring Lund from third for the winning run. Both Tweed and Lund would be surrounded by their teammates at home plate and first base after the winning run scored. Right after the celebration, the clouds opened up and it started to downpour on the field. The awards had to be handed out in the rain.
Tweed would get the victory, going all seven innings with five strikouts, two walks and giving up five hits. Nate Rodriguez took the loss, he had 10 strikeouts, two walks and gave up 12 hits. Tyler Gravseth of Dakota Prairie was 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a double. The catcher for Valley City Garret Suhr was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
First year Head Coach Logan Lund leads his team to a State Championship and a 24-4 final record. Valley City ends at 32-8-1.
Last year in Casselton, Grafton defeated Oakes for the Championship.
The State Babe Ruth Tournament will be held in New Rockford next year.
