N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Department of Transportation officials are tabulating the results of the recently completed “Click It or Ticket” campaign.
Mark Nelson is Safety Director with the Department of Transportation. He says the national campaign is taken up by a lot of agencies around the state and final numbers will not be known for a few weeks. Officials in Grand Forks say they saw yet another decline in seat belt violations this year.
In 2008, seat belt citations were issued in 28-percent of traffic stops – that number is down to 13-percent this year. Nelson says he is encouraged by the on-going positive movement.
Nelson says roughly one out of every four drivers in North Dakota does not wear a seat belt, and it’s an average the D-O-T is hoping to improve. He says it all adds up to making roadways in the state safer.
Nelson says getting that message across to drivers is important. He says so far this year more than half of those killed in motor vehicle crashes in the state have not been wearing a seat belt.
