CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) Valley City Barnes County Development Corporation is asking the Barnes County Commission to generate a four mill levy in their next budget cycle to assist in the economic development of the Interstate 94 corridor project.

Director of Development Jennifer Feist said the additional funding will be helpful making the John Deere Seeding Group expansion and the National Guard project a success.

But Commission President Eldred Knutson questioned why the issue wasn’t addressed earlier this year.

Knutson was referring to the $4.4 Million purchase of the Stan Ryan property. He said while he supports economic development, it may not be the right thing to do for Barnes County taxpayers.

The Development Corporation is asking the county to increase its mill levy to 4, the maximum allowed by state law. Currently Barnes County has a levy of slightly more than 2 mills.

Commissioner Rodger Berntson said the Development group will have to make the same request every year being the commission can only address a budget request like this annually.
