Harriet Stroh, 91, of Jamestown, ND, formerly of Adrian, ND, died Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown.
Harriet Marie Calkins the daughter of George and Caroline (Miller) Calkins was born August 27, 1921, on a farm near Marion, ND. She was raised on the family farm and attended school near Dickey, ND, in Saratoga Township. She graduated from Adrian High School in 1938 and attended Valley City Teachers College, receiving her teaching certificate in 1940. Harriet taught at Adrian for one year and at various other schools during the next five years. On June 13, 1945, she married Bernard Henry Stroh in Dickey, ND. They farmed on the Calkins family farm for 1 year while Harriet’s father worked in the shipyards. Harriet continued to teach after her marriage, teaching at Winfield Township in Stutsman County, Montpelier, and Nortonville, ND. The couple moved on a rented farm near Spiritwood until 1957, when the land was sold to build Interstate 94. At that time, they purchased a farm 2 miles west of Adrian, where they lived until they retiring in 1985, when they moved to Adrian. During this time, Harriet sold Avon and Watkins products for over 25 years.
Harriet was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, Dickey, ND. She belonged to St. Anne’s Altar Society where she held several different offices. Harriet was an active member of Adrian-Dickey Friendly Folks Senior Citizens, the Adrian Homemakers Variety Club and the Montpelier Senior Citizens. She was a past 4-H leader in the Adrian community and past league bowler in Nortonville, ND.
In 2002, they moved to Jamestown, ND and in 2004 they moved to Rock of Ages. Bernard went to be with his Heavenly Father in 2006. Harriet moved to Ave Maria Village in 2011. Harriet enjoyed reading books, playing cards, crocheting afghans, listening to M & M basketball tournaments on the radio, and she had a special place in her heart for collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House.
Survivors include her children: 2 daughters, Peggy (Bob) Roehrich, Valley City, ND, and Carol (Tim) Staiger, Jamestown, ND; 2 sons, Edward (Kate), Jamestown, ND and Duane (Karen), Adrian, ND; 8 grandchildren: Scott (Carina) Roehrich, Valley City, ND, Jamie (Pat) Richter, Walker, MN, Tiffany (Mike) Menschel, West Fargo, ND, Andrea (Brad) Nelson, Omaha, NE, Justin (Chris) Stroh, West Fargo, ND and Kyle (Jess) Stroh, Amenia, ND, Waylen Stroh, Adrian, ND and Melissa Stroh, Jamestown, ND; 10 great-grandchildren, Desiree (Andrew) Wildeman, Fargo, ND, Austin Richter, Walker, MN, Brandon Zaun, Phoenix, AZ, Brienne and Britta Roehrich, Valley City, ND and Mathieu and McKenzie Menschel, West Fargo, ND, Adley and Jera Stroh, Amenia, ND, and Brayden Stroh, West Fargo, ND.; and three great great grandchildren, Tayla Wildeman, Fargo, ND, Kaden and Bentley Zaun, Fargo, ND; and one sister-in-law, Catherine Stroh, Jamestown, ND.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; parents, George and Caroline Calkins; a brother, Harold Calkins; 1 grandson, Travis; and 1 great grandson, Collin.
Eucharist of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 22, 2013 at Assumption Catholic Church, Dickey, ND.
Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Prayer Service: 8:00 p.m., Sunday, July 21, 2013 at St. James Basilica, Jamestown with the Rosary beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Interment: Assumption Cemetery, Dickey, ND.
