CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) There will be a few kinks to work out for law enforcement as they learn more about the implementation of a tougher North Dakota DUI law passed earlier this year known as House Bill 1302.

Valley City attorney Russ Myhre said there will be a few adjustments for municipalities and state’s attorney’s office as the new law moves forward.

The new law went into effect on July 1. Someone arrest for the first time for DUI with twice the legal limit would be fined $500 and be required to serve jail time including community service. Another provision will make it a Class “A” felony if a impaired driver caused the death of another in a motor vehicle crash.

The city commission approved an ordinance (956) that allows fines from DUI’s to go directly to the city instead of being forwarded to the state. Under the advisement from Valley City attorney Russ Myhre the commission approved the ordinance during their regular meeting on July 1.
