ND (NewsDakota.com) – Abortion foes say they’re not surprised that the Center for Reproductive Rights is challenging two anti-abortion laws passed by the 2013 Legislature.
One law prohibits abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected which is normally at about six weeks. The other prohibits abortions for sex selection and when a fetus has genetic deformities.
Bismarck Republican Senator Margaret Sitte (sit’-tee) either sponsored or co-sponsored a number of the anti-abortion bills passed by the North Dakota Legislature. She says one of the purposes of the bills passed by the Legislature is to directly challenge the 1973 Roe versus Wade decision by the Supreme Court.
But Sitte says she doubts that the Supreme Court will use the North Dakota laws to overturn Roe.
The Center wants the federal court to issue an injunction – preventing the two laws from taking effect August First.
