Lake, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol and the Cavalier County Sheriff’s Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at a pre-determined location in Cavalier County on Friday, June 21. The checkpoint will run from approximately 9 to 11 p.m.

Immediately following the checkpoint, NDHP troopers and Cavalier County officers will be on patrol in Cavalier County to detect and apprehend impaired drivers.

Impaired drivers are a threat to the safety and well-being of all motorists. Sixty people have died in traffic crashes on North Dakota roadways in 2013. Tragically, 36 percent of the victims died in alcohol-related crashes. Sobriety checkpoints are an important enforcement tool and public education effort aimed at reducing alcohol-related crashes.

The primary purpose of a sobriety checkpoint is to deter the deadly practice of drinking and driving. Public information and education increase the perception of “risk of apprehension” of motorists who would operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Advanced notification of the checkpoint, including date, time, general location and duration of the checkpoint, is provided to the public to enhance the deterrent effect. Results will be provided after the checkpoint’s completion.

For drivers passing through a sobriety checkpoint who make the right decision and choose not to drink and drive, the delay should be minimal.
