ND (NewsDakota.com) – For the week ending June 9, 2013, rain continued to cause problems by either halting or slowing planting progress last week, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Dakota Field Office.

Statewide, on average, there were 3.0 days suitable for fieldwork. Persistent moisture the past few weeks has left standing water in many fields around the state and no crops will be planted on those fields as a result. For some crops that did get planted, there are reports of crops emerging well and looking good. However, other reports indicate germination problems and emerged crops have “yellowed” as a result of the cool, wet weather conditions.

Warmer, drier weather is needed across the state to help crop growth and development. Topsoil moisture supplies were 99 percent in the adequate to surplus range, while subsoil moisture supplies were 96 percent adequate to surplus. Besides trying to get the last of their crops planted, producers are also busy spraying their emerged crops.

Field Crops Report: Spring wheat seeding was 77 percent complete, behind last year at 100 and 94 average. Emerged was 58 percent, behind last year at 100 and 85 average. Condition rated 3 percent very poor, 4 poor, 24 fair, 55 good, and 14 excellent.

Durum wheat seeding was 78 percent complete, behind 100 for 2012 and 85 average. Emerged was 55 percent, behind last year at 99 and 74 average. Condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 14 fair, 82 good, and 3 excellent.

Oats seeding was 80 percent complete, behind 100 last year and 95 average. Emerged was at 71 percent, behind last year at 100 and 85 average. Jointed were at 5 percent, behind last year at 77 and 29 average. Condition rated 2 percent very poor, 1 poor, 19 fair, 58 good, and 20 excellent.

Barley seeding is now 68 percent complete, behind 100 for 2012 and 92 average. Emerged was 48 percent, well behind last year at 100 and 83 average. Condition rated 5 percent very poor, 3 poor, 27 fair, 57 good, and 8 excellent.

Canola seeding was 57 percent complete, behind last year at 100 and 90 for the average. Emerged was 31 percent, behind last year at 100 and 75 average. Condition rated 6 percent very poor, 8 poor, 37 fair, 45 good, and 4 excellent.

Flaxseed seeding was 42 percent complete, behind 96 last year and 84 average. Emerged was 18 percent, behind 81 for 2012 and 63 average. Condition rated 2 percent very poor, 3 poor, 40 fair, 49 good, and 6 excellent.

Sugarbeet planting was 94 percent complete, behind last year at 100 and 98 average. Emerged was at 53 percent, behind 100 a year ago and 85 average. Condition rated 15 percent very poor, 10 poor, 36 fair, 36 good, and 3 excellent.

Corn planting was 89 percent complete, behind 100 last year and 98 average. Emerged was 67 percent, behind 99 last year and 83 average. Condition rated 2 percent very poor, 3 poor, 26 fair, 55 good, and 14 excellent.

Soybean planting advanced 18 percentage points to 69 percent complete, still well behind last year at 99 and 89 average. Emerged was at 25 percent, behind 2012 at 91 and 61 average. Condition rated 4 percent very poor, 2 poor, 21 fair, 58 good, and 15 excellent.

Potato planting was 63 percent complete, also well behind last year at 100 and 91 average. Emerged was at 16 percent, behind 2012 at 83 and 49 average. Condition rated 23 percent very poor, 18 poor, 36 fair, 22 good, and 1 excellent.

Dry edible pea planting was 89 percent complete, behind last year at 100 but equal to 89 average. Emerged was 71 percent, behind last year at 100 and 85 average. Condition rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 18 fair, 73 good, and 6 excellent.
