N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Carp located in the Jamestown Reservoir have been mysteriously dying as a result of a disease.
On May 18th, 2013 during the annual Anglers Derby, reports came in regarding carp that had been found floating to the surface in the reservoir.
Gene Van Eeckhout, a North Dakota Game and Fish Department fisheries biologist, believes that the disease is suspected to be Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC).
“Samples have been taken and sent to Bozeman, MT. If the disease is bacterial, we should know in a short amount of time. But it might take a couple of weeks before we know if it’s a viral disease.”
The disease seems to be just restricted to common carp, but it’s not known if the disease has affected other fish.
Dead carp have been found at Smokey’s Landing and also North of Buchanan Bridge. Dead carp found near the electrical fish barrier are not suspected to be dead as a result of the disease.
When asked, Van Eeckhout could only guess as to how much carp were reportedly affected by the disease.
Spring Viremia of Carp (SVC) is a contagious viral disease mainly seen in farmed carp and related species. Outbreaks can cause substantial economic losses.
