FARGO (NewsDakota.com) – Jessica Denholm and Dierra Diegel each hit home runs Saturday as Valley City defeated Fargo Davies 13-3 to win the Consolation Championship at the Class A State Fast Pitch Tournament.
The Hi-Liners racked up 13 hits in the victory, and never trailed after jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Danica Diegel pitched a complete game, allowing just one hit and striking out four.
Dierra Diegel’s 2-run home run keyed a five-run sixth inning as Valley City won by run rule after six innings. Heather Knutson’s RBI single to right scored Brooke Breckheimer to end the game. Denholm hit her 2-run home run in the fourth inning, giving Valley City an 8-1 lead.
Valley City’s lone senior Jasmine Stevens went 3-for-3 and scored three runs, sparking rally innings with all three of her hits. Denholm finished 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs; Danica Diegel went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs; and Dierra Diegel was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Breckheimer and Knutson also each collected a hit.
Valley City finishes the season with a 17-10 record. Valley City head coach Jason Lindgren was named the Class A State Coach of the Year. The 5th place finish at State bests the program’s previous finish of 6th back in 2011.
West Fargo won the state title for the 16th straight year, defeating Minot Bishop Ryan 1-0 for the second straight year.
