FARGO (NewsDakota.com) – Brooke Breckheimer hit a grand slam and drove in five runs as Valley City rallied to knock off Fargo North 8-6 during the consolation semifinals Friday at the Class A State Softball Tournament.
Valley City will play Fargo Davies for fifth place at about noon on Saturday. That game can be heard live on KOVC 1490 and NewsDakota.com.
On Friday, the Hi-Liners trailed 4-0 after four of the first five Fargo North batters came around to score in the first inning. But the Hi-Liners chipped away with one run in the first, two in the third, and then tied it at 4-4 with a run in the third.
North went back up 6-4 with two in the top of the fourth, but with bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the inning, Breckheimer blasted a 2-0 pitch over the left-field fence to put Valley City up 8-6.
Danica Diegel settled down after that rough first inning, scattering 13 hits in a complete-game performance on the mound. Jessica Denholm, Breckheimer, Madison McDaniel and Jasmine Stevens all had two hits each. Valley City finished with 10 hits and did not commit an error.
Courtney Johnson led Fargo North with four hits and two RBIs in the loss. In the other consolation semifinals, Fargo Davies defeated Bismarck 5-4 in eight innings.
