(NewsDakota.com)- The Jamestown baseball team is headed to the state tournament for the first time since 2007. The Jays defeated St. Mary’s by a final of 4-2 to clinch the West’s No. 4-seed next week in Jamestown.

Jamestown got on the board early with back-to-back doubles from Ben Walz and Tyler Ukestad to take a 1-0 lead in the first. The Saints got their first run off Ukestad in the third inning to tie the game. Both runs given up by Jamestown were unearned runs.

The Jays struck for two runs in the fourth inning when Jake Stilwell lead off with a double off the fence and came around to score on a throwing error. Tanner Lunzman drove in Brian Wenzel with a ground out in that inning as well.

After six sparkling innings of one-hit ball from Ukestad, Stilwell came in and relief to earn the save. Stilwell struck out the first two batters he faced, the third reached on an error and he got the next batter to pop out to end the game.

With Minot’s win over Williston the Jays will be the No. 4-seed out of the West Region, which means they will play the EDC Champion in the opening round. Fargo Shanley and West Fargo play Saturday night to decide the title.
