Rose Mary Reiland, 87, Pingree, ND, died Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City, ND.
Rose Mary Matz was born January 25, 1926 in Waseca, MN, the daughter of Frank and Caroline (Flemming) Matz. In 1928, the family came to North Dakota after buying a farm near Nortonville. Rose Mary attended a one room country school and Nortonville High School. She rode ponies to school for those twelve years. She attended Jamestown College on a scholarship, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1947. She then taught in North Dakota high schools for seventeen years. She received her Masters Degree from the University of North Dakota. She received a Journalism Fellowship to attend Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI one summer and also attended summer school at Black Hills State University, Spearfish, SD; Montana State University, Bozeman, MT and the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN. On October 14, 1961, she married Walter Reiland in Edgeley, ND. For their honeymoon, they traveled around the world, seeing Asia, Africa and Europe. In 1963, they bought a farm near Pingree, ND where they farmed, milked cows and raised chickens and ducks.
Rose Mary enjoyed traveling. During 4 summers, she and her brother saw the four corners of the United States. In 1950, they traveled to Rome where they saw the Pope. In 1958, she joined a group of teachers and traveled to South America. After she and Walter had rented out their farmland, Rose Mary traveled extensively including trips to: Alaska, Russia, Australia, China, Africa, Eastern Europe, Iceland, the Caribbean, Central America and Canada. Her last overseas trip was to Cambodia, Borneo and Bali. She went on many Elderhostel trips, seeing such places as the beautiful Galapagos Islands, Georgia Islands, Antarctica, Mexico’s Copper Canyon, Oregon’s Crater Lake and the opportunity to walk on the Oregon Trail. She was fond of the islands, especially Bora Bora and Easter Island with all its fallen statues. She saw the polar bears in Churchill, Canada, rode an elephant and a camel and was in a hot air balloon above the African Serengeti.
Rose Mary enjoyed music. She gave piano lessons for over fifty years. Her dream came true when she was able to build the Reiland Fine Arts Center on the campus of Jamestown College.
Rose Mary is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Emory; brothers-in-law, Ted Reiland, Paul Bultman, and Robert Reiland; and sisters-in-law, Betty Reiland, Marie Bultman, and Sister Mary Alice Reiland.
Eucharist of Christian Burial: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 25, 2013 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Pingree, ND.
Prayer Service – 7:00 p.m., Friday, May 24, 2013 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with the Rosary to begin at 6:30pm.
Visitation – 1:00p.m., to 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 24, 2013 at the funeral home.
Interment – Pingree Cemetery, Pingree, ND.
Memorials are preferred to the Sheyenne Care Center –Alzheimer’s unit or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
