CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City girls tennis team is heading to the State Tournament for the first time since 2002.

The Hi-Liners went 2-1 Thursday during the EDC Team Dual Tournament in Fargo, earning the No. 3 seed from the East for next week’s State Tournament. It is the first time since 2002 that the Hi-Liner girls have qualified for state as a team.

Valley City entered the EDC Tournament as the No. 3 seed and opened with a 4-1 victory over No. 6 Fargo Shanley. In the semifinals, Valley City lost 4-1 to No. 2 West Fargo. But the Hi-Liners clinched their spot at state with a narrow 3-2 win against Fargo North.

Maia Wendel and Reagan Ingstad won at No. 2 doubles, Destiny Winkler won at No. 3 singles, and then Clarissa Olson clinched the state tournament berth with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.

Up next: Valley City plays in the EDC Singles and Doubles Tournaments on Friday and Saturday in Fargo. Destiny Winkler and Clarissa Olson are the No. 2 seed in the doubles bracket. Sam Coit and Sara Gilbertson are the No. 6 seed in doubles. Maia Wendel, Reagan Ingstad, and Cassidy Fulton will all be unseeded playing in the singles tournament.
