CITY (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City’s girls tennis team locked up the No. 3 seed for the EDC Tournament with a 7-2 victory over Wahpeton on Friday.
With the win, Valley City ends the EDC regular season at 5-3. They’ll be seeded No. 3 for the EDC Team Tournament on Thursday, and will take on Fargo Shanley in the opening round at 10 a.m.
On Saturday, Valley City competed at the West Fargo Invite and took fifth place out of 17 teams. The Hi-Liners scored 12 team points, taking a first, second and third in doubles play.
In the No. 3 doubles bracket, Maia Wendel and Reagan Ingstad were tournament champions. At No. 2 doubles, Sara Gilbertson and Sam Coit were tournament runner-ups. And at No. 1 doubles, Clarissa Olson and Destiny Winkler earned the bronzed.
“We finished 5th at the West Fargo Invite and scored 12 points,” said head coach Matt Nielson. “None of my prior teams, guys or girls, since I started coaching 7 years ago, have scored more than 3 points.”
Up next: Valley City begins postseason play Thursday with the EDC Team Tournament in Fargo. The top four teams advance to state. Friday and Saturday will be the EDC Doubles and Singles Tournament.
