CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City State softball team picked up two wins this weekend before being eliminated from the NAIA Unaffiliated Softball Tournament in Dickinson.

The Vikings defeated Dakota State 11-6 in Friday’s opening round, but dropped a tough 3-1 loss to top seed Dickinson State in the second round. VCSU pitcher Samantha Nalley allowed just five hits in the game, and the Vikings led 1-0 up until Dickinson scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Valley City State bounced back in loser-out play with a big 17-6 victory over Mayville State. The Vikings erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull away from the Comets.

VCSU’s season came to end in the next game though, as they fell 6-3 to University of Great Falls in a loser-out game. Great Falls scored three runs in the first and fourth innings en route to the victory.

Valley City State ends the season with a 10-26 record. The Vikings started the year 1-17 before regrouping and finishing 9-9 over the final month of play.

Dickinson State went on to win the tournament championship. The Blue Hawks lost the first championship game to Great Falls, but came back in game two for a 14-2 victory to claim the championship and a spot in the national tournament.

Jamestown College was the No. 2 seed and went 1-2 at the tournament. The Jimmies received a bye in the first round, and then beat Great Falls 8-0. The Jimmies lost to Dickinson State 5-2 in the semifinals, and were eliminated in their next game with a 6-2 loss to Great Falls.
