(NewsDakota.com) – Valley City State’s baseball season came to an end Friday, one game shy of the championship series at the NAIA Unaffiliated Baseball Tournament.
The Vikings were eliminated from the tournament Friday afternoon by Mayville State, 5-3 at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown. VCSU finishes the season at 15-26. Mayville improves to 34-5-1, and advances to play Jamestown College in the championship series. The Comets must beat Jamestown twice to win the tournament.
Valley City’s only runs came on a 3-run home run from Scott Stephenson in the third inning. Ryan Shaw pitched a complete game but took the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits in eight innings. Two of the runs were earned after two Viking errors in the game.
VCSU led 3-1 early in the game thanks to Stephenson’s home run in the top of the third inning. Mayville State tied it up on a two-out, two-run single off the bat of Dillon Lundin in the bottom of the fourth.
The Comets gained the lead for good in the sixth inning. Lundin’s RBI ground-out scored John Pistalka, and then Spencer Mallonee added an RBI single for a 5-3 lead.
The Vikings put two runners on with one out in the eighth, but could not score any more. VCSU outhit Mayville 10-8, but the Comets converted four double plays to erase Viking baserunners.
Darin Stanislawski started on the mound for Mayville and gave up seven hits and three runs in four innings of work. Kurt McCallum came on in relief and was very good for five shutout innings, allowing just three hits.
