CITY (NewsDakota.com) – After finally receiving some nice weather this spring, the Valley City State softball team is taking full advantage. The Vikings played their fourth doubleheader in five days on Monday afternoon, splitting a pair of games at Concordia College in Moorhead.

The Vikings lost the first game 8-3, but then picked up a 5-4 victory in game two. With the split, VCSU is now 8-24 on the season.

Up next: The Vikings will scrimmage Williston State College on Tuesday for Senior Day in Valley City, and then head to Dickinson for the Unaffiliated NAIA National Qualifier Tournament this weekend. VCSU is the No. 4 seed for the five-team, double-elimination tournament. VCSU takes on No. 5 Dakota State in the first game of the tournament at 10 a.m. Friday morning.

Concordia College 8, Valley City State 3
Concordia College scored four runs in the top of the third inning to break a 1-1 tie, and never trailed as they picked up an 8-3 win in game one. Concordia racked up 11 hits in the game.

VCSU pitcher Samantha Nalley took the loss. She recorded the first six outs of the game by strikeout before the Cobbers got to her for those four runs in the third.

Courtney Shadlock led the Viking offense with two RBIs.

Valley City State 5, Concordia College 4
Tied at 3-3, the Vikings scored two runs in the top of the seventh and then held on in the bottom of the inning for a 5-4 victory.

Nalley came on in relief in the second inning and pitched six strong innings for the victory, striking out 10 and allowing just three runs.

Offensively, four different Vikings had two hits. Katarina Boychuk had two hits and scored two runs. Adrianna Boychuk, Hayley Bevan and Liz Hall-Sewall also had two hits each.
