CITY (NewsDakota.com) – It was a cold, but successful home debut Thursday for the Valley City State softball team.
Playing on the football turf of Shelly Ellig Field, the Vikings swept rival Mayville State 8-5 and 10-9 in a doubleheader. VCSU improves to 5-21 on the year; the Comets are 3-16.

The Vikings and Comets rematch Friday for another doubleheader at noon, also at Shelly Ellig Field. Temps were in the 40’s on Thursday, but Friday’s forecast calls for high temperatures in the 50’s.
VCSU 8, Mayville 5
Samantha Nalley earned the win in the circle, throwing all seven innings and allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out five.
The Vikings trailed 3-1 after three innings, but tied it up in the bottom of the third and took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth inning.
Courtney Shadlock lead the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Hayley Bevan had a hit, an RBI and scored two runs.
VCSU 10, Mayville 9 (8 innings)
The offense revved up for both teams in game two as they combined for 31 hits and 19 runs. The Vikings had the last laugh though, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth and holding off a rally from Mayville in the bottom of the inning.
Shadlock continued her big day at the plate with three hits and five more RBIs. Adrianna Boychuk, Katarina Boychuk, and Liz Hall-Sewell all had three hits in the game, and Hayley Bevan and Hilary Kulcewski each tallied two hits.
The Vikings had a 7-1 lead before Mayville scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie it up. Samantha Nalley earned her second win in the circle, coming on in the fifth inning in relief of Torri Fenton.
