CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The market value of property assessments in Valley City increased by .5 million in 2013 compared to one year ago for a total of slightly more than 5 million according to city assessor Sandra Hansen.

She said new construction sales in Valley City was nearly $1.2 million last year. Hansen said overall assessments are low in Valley City. She also explained why the commercial sales ratio was down and needs to be more in compliance in the future.

Valley City resident Lloyd Nelson questioned high property tax assessments and believes his home has been unfairly targeted in the assessment process.

Hansen said the points that Mr. Nelson made during the city equalization hearing would be addressed and studied further.

Meanwhile, Hansen told newsdakota.com that the housing market is tight in Valley City and will only get tighter once the John Deere Seeding company expansion project is complete.
