CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) A city proposal to keep the 9-1-1 dispatch center in the city owned law enforcement center was handed to Barnes County commissioners yesterday.

Valley City commissioner Duane Magnuson said under the plan the city would pay for remodeling expenses and lease the space for a-dollar.

Meanwhile, the Barnes County commission will discuss a proposal to relocate the Public Service Answering Point system or dispatch center and to talk about dispatcher pay at their May 7 meeting.

Barnes County Commissioner Rodger Berntson said the county wants to move the 9-1-1 dispatch center out of flood prone downtown Valley City on the recommendation from officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency following the flood fights of 2009 and 2011. He also cited health issues for moving out referring to high lead levels in the basement shooting range of the city owned law enforcement center.

Valley City Police Chief Fred Thompson said the contractor continues to work removing lead in the basement of the former shooting range.
