N.D. (AP) – The medical director of North Dakota’s lone abortion clinic says a bill passed in the 2011 Legislature would end the practice of medication abortions and leave pregnant women with “less choice.”

The Red River Women’s Clinic of Fargo is challenging the law that bans the use of a drug that induces abortions. Judge Wickham Corwin has blocked the legislation from taking effect and is presiding over a civil trial that began Tuesday. Clinic medical director Kathryn Eggleston testified that the clinic began offering medication abortions in 2007 because women demanded it. She says patients wanted a separate option to surgical abortion.

The challenge could be the first of many abortion rights lawsuits in the state. Lawmakers this session have passed the most restrictive abortion laws in the country.
