John Obert Sundquist was born January 20, 1924 near Aneta, ND, the son of Arnold and Inga (Hovde) Sundquist. He grew up on the farm NE of Aneta, attended rural school, and worked as a farmhand. John attended welding school before moving to Seattle, WA where he worked as a ship welder until entering the US Army on December 14, 1944. On November 22, 1946, he was honorably discharged. He returned to the Aneta area and worked for a farmer and later for Pladson Implement of Finley, ND.
On April 1, 1948, John was united in marriage to Audrey Hillesland, of Kloten, ND, in Moorhead, MN. John and Audrey farmed for 40 years, SE of Finley. He also drove truck for Thorsgard Trucking of Northwood, ND. In 2008, they moved to Litchville, ND. They moved into the Legacy Place in Valley City, ND in March 2012.
He was a member of Bang Lutheran Church, Portland, ND, the American Legion, and was a past Sherbrooke Township Board member.
John died at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City on April 12, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Audrey of Valley City; sons, Ronald (Connie) of Fargo, ND and Warren (Deborah) of Milnor, ND; daughters, Arlene (John) Andrus and Helen (Jack) Olson both of Litchville; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters, Ina Thorsgard of Thief River Falls, MN, Carol Manthei of Fargo, and Doris (Gary) Johnson of Twin Valley, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Arnold, Jr. and Carl.
The funeral service for John O. Sundquist, 89, Valley City, ND, formerly of rural Finley, ND will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Bang Lutheran Church, rural Portland, ND. Burial will be in the Bang Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City. A prayer service will be held there beginning at 7:00. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
