(NewsDakota.com) A few key items of note came from the most recent Oakes School Board meeting on Tuesday.
Due to two days and two hours of school lost because of weather this past winter, the school board has announced that a make-up day for one of the full days lost will be made up on May 23, with the other full day not having to be made up thanks to a particular state regulation, which applies to Oakes in this instance.
However, the two hours are required to be made up, and the Board announced that the time will be spread out over 30 minute increments on four days: April 12, 15, 18 and 19. 10 minutes will be added to the mornings on those days, with the other 20 minutes coming in the afternoons. Superintendent Art Conklin noted that the earlier start time on those days will not affect morning bus times.
The elementary school has failed for the second straight year to meet the goal for Annual Yearly Progress, under the federal “No Child Left Behind” act, and has now been placed in “program improvement”. Under Program Improvement, a school must write a plan for improving the academic achievement of its students, and additional resources must be focused toward instructional strategies and supportive programs aimed at meeting the needs of all students, including educationally disadvantaged students. The school also enters a timeline of sanctions required under the No Child Left Behind Act. Conkiln says many school districts fell short of the goal, and will be meeting in Bismarck with the State Department of Public Instruction in the near future to discuss options and improvement steps.
A School Board election will take place on June 4 for the seat representing the city of Oakes. John Baake will seek re-election, and will run again Karla Hoelscher. Voting will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Oakes High School gym lobby.
