CITY (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City State baseball team put together a 2-1 record during a round-robin tournament this past weekend in Dickinson.
The Vikings beat Dickinson State 3-0 and University of Winnipeg 9-3. They lost 6-1 to Jamestown College. VCSU is now 10-12 on the season. Their scheduled games Monday at Dakota Wesleyan were postponed for the second time this year due to weather.
Up next: VCSU is scheduled to host Mayville State on Saturday and play at Mayville State on Sunday, but those games appear highly unlikely to be played in those locations due to weather.
VCSU 3, Dickinson St. 0
Derek Zitzow tossed a seven-inning shutout for the Vikings, allowing just four hits in the 3-0 victory. Preston Jensen had two hits for the Vikings, who collected eight hits total and scored single runs in the first, third and sixth innings. Colin Waldner, Scott Stephenson and Joey Demers all had an RBI.
Zitzow improved to 3-2 on the mound this season and lowered his ERA to 2.73.
VCSU 9, University of Winnipeg 3
Bryce Venaas struck out 12 batters, and the Viking offense scored seven runs in the seventh inning to make him a winner on the mound.
Venaas allowed four hits and three runs with those 12 strikeouts. All three runs came in the bottom of the fourth as Winnipeg took a 3-2 lead. But the Viking offense came to life in the last inning, scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh. Venaas improved to 2-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.88.
Colin Waldner paced the Vikings with two hits and two RBIs. His sacrifice fly in the seventh provided the go-ahead run. Dan Buehner added two RBIs.
Jamestown 6, VCSU 1
Jamestown’s Paul Roers owned the mound in this one, allowing just one hit and one run in seven innings of work as he led the Jimmies to a 6-1 victory over VCSU in the first game of the weekend.
Brenden Shearer had the lone hit for the Vikings. Ronnie Blagg took the loss, allowing five runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.
The Jimmies were paced at the plate by Nathan Christiuk who had two hits and two RBIs. Spencer Flaten added two hits for the Jimmies, who went 5-0 over the Easter weekend and improved to 13-8 on the year.
