N.D. (NewsDakota.com) The greater white-fronted goose, named for the distinctive white band at the base of its bill, has been selected by judges to be the 2013 ‘Best of Show’ in the North Dakota Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
18-year-old Destiny Winkler of Valley City, ND, titled her winning artwork ‘Humble Greatness’. Destiny has participated in the Junior Duck Stamp Contest for the past five years. In grades 8-11, she received honorable mention placings, and in grade 12, she took the highest honor in the state – Best of Show!
Mrs. Kelly Callahan, art instructor at Valley City High School, incorporates the Junior Duck Stamp Program into her art curriculum each year. Mrs. Callahan is passionate about art and wildlife and shares this enthusiasm with her students. When asked how much time was spent on her artwork entry, Destiny replied ‘approximately 14 hours in Mrs. Callahan’s class and an additional 10 hours at home’. Destiny’s time and effort paid off, as her artwork was selected from 1,075 entries received from throughout North Dakota.
Destiny is a senior at Valley City High School, preparing to attend Jamestown College next fall. Destiny has lived in North Dakota her entire life, and enjoys reading, creative writing, and completing craft projects.
In April, Destiny’s artwork will compete at the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, along with other state and U.S. territory entries. The winner of the national contest will have their entry made into a Junior Duck Stamp that is sold for $5, with proceeds from these stamps supporting conservation education programs.
Mayce Brodehl, a 13 year old from Newburg, received Best of Show Runner-Up honors. Mayce featured an acrylic painting of a drake canvasback, which she titled ‘Sunset Stroll’. Mayce takes art lessons from Marjorie Teske at Studio-on-the-Prairie.
The North Dakota Junior Duck Stamp Banquet and Awards Ceremony will be held for all first, second, and third place winners at the Seven Seas in Mandan, on May 4. Winning students will receive an invitation to the banquet where they will also receive ribbons and prizes donated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ducks Unlimited, and wildlife clubs from throughout North Dakota. The winning artwork will be exhibited throughout the state at national wildlife refuge events, zoos, shopping malls, Fargo Scheels, and other locations throughout the year.
