A. Lien, 68, of Milnor, ND, passed away March 21, 2013, at Sanford Health Palliative Care, Fargo, ND, surrounded by family.
Gary was born December 13, 1944 at Breckenridge, Minnesota to Maynard and Gene (Martinson) Lien. He grew up and attended school at Milnor, graduating from Milnor High School with the class of 1962. He was united in marriage to Paulette Tayer on March 30, 1968. Gary lived his entire life in the Milnor area, where he began farming with his parents and had dairy cows. Gary and Paulette made their home southwest of Milnor on Gary’s Grandparents farm, Marvin and Svea Lien. Gary enjoyed gardening, playing and watching sports. In his younger days, he was remembered for his left-handed hook shot. Gary loved to hunt and fish with his sons, daughters-in-law, grandkids, nieces and nephews. Not only his children, but he also enjoyed taking his sons’ friends hunting and fishing. Music was a big part of Gary’s life. He was the bass singer in the Wild Oats Band. He was also in the Air National Guard for six years. Gary was a member of the Milnor American Legion. He served on several different boards; including the Milnor Township, Bison Booster Club, Spirit Corporation and Milnor Grain and Trading. Gary continued to farm and work for the US Postal Service as a mail carrier until retiring from farming in 2008 and the Postal Service in December 2010. In 1999, they moved into Milnor. Gary was a member of the Milnor Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife Paulette; four sons, Jamey (Barbara) Lien, West Fargo, Bradley (Julie) Lien, Rogers, MN, Kristopher (Tracy) Lien and Kasey (Kali) Lien, all of Milnor; 10 grandchildren, Nolan Lien, Matthew Casperson, Lauren Casperson and fiancé Micah Tengesdal, Mikaela, Isabella and Maximus Lien, Elle & Payton Lien and Hunter Lien. He is also survived by two brothers, John (Connie) Lien and Marshall (Rachel) Lien, all of Milnor; two sisters, Connie (Dave) Robbins, Milnor and Mary (Randy) Rotenberger, Gwinner, ND.; three brothers-in-law, Tim Tayer, Kraig Tayer and Brian (Paula) Tayer, and two sisters-in-law, Carolyn (LaVerne) Colby and Barb (Glen) Koeppe and many nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his in-laws, Duane (Loyola) Tayer and Bev (Gerald) Martinson.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 25th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM with a prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. at Milnor Lutheran Church, Milnor, ND. His funeral will be Tuesday, March 26, 2013, 2:30 PM at Milnor Lutheran Church with burial to follow at the Milnor Lutheran Cemetery near Milnor.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be given to the MACC in memory of Gary.
