Fiala, 80, of Oakes, ND, passed away March 21, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Emma Marie, daughter of Henry and Katie (Bitz) Bogda was born on April 20, 1932 in Ashley, North Dakota, where she grew up and attended school. She was united in marriage to John Anton Fiala on June 30, 1952 in Oakes. They worked and raised their children on their turkey farm near Oakes. While married, Emma worked as a waitress at Cline’s Café in Oakes. She later helped her husband on the Schmidt farm, while raising their family. John passed away on November 13, 2001. Emma entered the Good Samaritan Society in 2003, where she enjoyed both the residents and the employees that were there.

Emma loved volunteer work, gardening, and playing cards. Her favorite pasttime was spending time with family and getting ready for the holidays. She was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

She is survived by her children, Frances (David) Behrens, Moorhead, MN, John Fiala, and Emma (Ivan) Mann, all of Oakes, Tom (Rie) Fiala, Merritt Island, FL, Jim Fiala, Oakes, and Joe Fiala, Lakewood, CO; one brother, Albert Bogda; two sisters, Irene (Tim) Gibson, Oakes, and Marian Metke, Aberdeen, SD. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jamie (Kris) Kofoed, Jenna Fiala, Dustin Fiala, Miku Fiala, Naoto Fiala, Aaron Fiala, Sara Hoikkala and Jarod Thompson, Steven (Jenna) Hoikkala, John Mann, and Tricia Thomas; and her great-grandchildren, Phinn and Thad Thompson, Kaigen Kofoed, Akirah Straughter, and Ebony and Makiah Thomas. Emma was preceded in death by her husband, John Fiala, an infant son, Leo Paul Fiala, her parents, Henry and Katie Bogda, and two brothers, Bill Bogda and Oscar Bogda.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. with a prayer service starting at 6:30 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes. Her funeral mass will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Oakes, with burial to follow at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery near Oakes.
