(NewsDakota.com) – Kendra Weigel and Sheridon Dewald each scored 17 points and Mariah Jangula added 13 as Napoleon outlasted Beach 61-55 in the first round of the Class B Girls Basketball State Tournament.

Napoleon led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but Beach battled back and took a 46-44 lead at the end of third quarter on a deep 3-pointer from Cydni Stedman. The teams traded points throughout the fourth quarter before Brenna Schmidt and Dewald broke a 54-54 tie with back-to-back baskets that brought appreciative roars from the huge Napoleon crowd at the Fargodome.


Mikayla Young scored eight points from Napoleon, all of which came in the second half. Nine of Weigel’s 17 points came on three 3-pointers.

Napoleon (23-1) moves on to the semifinals Friday night at 6:30 p.m. where they will take on Region 1 champion Central Cass. The game can be heard on TED 98.3/102.7 and at NewsDakota.com with pregame starting at about 6:20 p.m. The Squirrels (23-3) advanced with a 70-37 win over Grant County in the second game of the day.

This is the first state tournament appearance since 1983 for Napoleon. Beach was making their fourth straight appearance and this is the third time in the last four years that Central Cass has played in the state tournament.
