CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) A House measure introduced by Valley City Representative Dwight Kiefert has generated a lot of discussion around the state that would let school districts decide whether or not they should arm staff members and administrators with weapons to protect students.

Superintendent Dean Koppelman doesn’t support arming staff members but he favors the bill because it would allow school districts to decide what is best for them.
School board member Mike Callahan favors discussing the controversial issue publicly and opposes talking about it under Executive Session rule closed to the media and public, under that measure school district’s could exercise that option.
House bill 1215 is now being mulled over in the North Dakota Senate.
