The funeral service for Viola “Vi” Guertin, 95, Valley City, North Dakota will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at First Baptist Church, Valley City, with Pastor Jim Black officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens, Valley City, in the spring. Vi passed away Saturday, March 09, at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

     Visitation will be 1 to 5 pm Monday at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel and one hour before the service at the church.

     Viola Guertin was born November 15, 1917 in Medina, North Dakota, the daughter of John and Sophia (Steiger) Klein. She attended rural school near Medina. The family moved to a farm near Sanborn. Vi was united in marriage to Stanley Guertin on March 22, 1936 at the First Baptist Church in Valley City. They made their home in Valley City, where she worked in the laundry department at Mercy Hospital. They moved to Fargo in 1956 and returned to Valley City in 1957 following the Fargo tornado. They retired in 1981 and Stanley died on September, 11, 2006.

     She was very close to her sister Martha, who also lived in Valley City, as they would do many things together. Vi enjoyed cooking and baking and was a great hostess, holding many gatherings in their little house. Vi also loved her flowers. She had a very strong faith in God and enjoyed her church family very much.

     Vi is survived by three daughters, Dee Sanderson, Dayton, Ohio; Sharon (Jeff) Auger, Clermont, Florida; and Pat (Will) Matheny, Seattle, Washington; a son, Steve (Lennell) Guertin, Valley City; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. A sister, Rachael Kania, Minneapolis, Minnesota also survives.

     She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a sister, Martha Henke; four brothers, Ben, Ted, Reuben and John.
