(NewsDakota.com) The Oakes High School girls basketball team started their run in the post-season on the right foot with a solid 65-45 win against the Hankinson Pirates in the opening round of the Class B District 1 Girls Basketball Tournament in Oakes on Friday night.
The Tornadoes, who had won the only other contest earlier in the year, took only a four point lead into the end of the first quarter; with neither team scoring in the first couple of minutes. The third quarter saw Oakes become hot, as they outscored the Pirates 18-10 and had a lead as large as 23 in the contest.
The victorious Tornadoes were lead in scoring by Nicole Warren with 20 points, Quinn Vculek had 12. Hankinson had 18 points from Betsy Asp in the loss.
With the win, Oakes now goes up against the #2 seeded Milnor Bison on Saturday night around 7:30 while the Pirates will look to stay off elimination as they take on Wyndmere/Lidgerwood around 4:30 Saturday afternoon. The other two games to be played in round two feature North Sargent and Sargent Central at 3 p.m. and Lisbon tangling with F-C-T around 6 p.m.
