(NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City High School basketball teams battled to a split Thursday in their EDC regular season finale at Fargo South.

The Hi-Liners girls won a hard-fought 46-42 victory in the opener, and the boys hung tough before falling 67-60 in the nightcap.

Madison Taylor scored 13 points to lead the Hi-Liner girls, who impoved to 11-8 overall and 7-11 in the EDC. Mariah Olstad added 10 points, including two free throws with four seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Valley City finishes the season in a three-way tie for 5th with Wahpeton and Devils Lake, but after tiebreakers the Hi-Liners will be the No. 7 seed for postseason play and will host Grand Forks Central for a play-in game this weekend.

In the boys game, Valley City trailed by four at halftime, and went down by as many as 10 before battling back. A layup by Mason Denholm got the Hi-Liners within one point with 3:15 to go. But Paxton Lloyd hit two buckets to put South up six and they would hang on down the stretch. Colton Lloyd scored 31 points in the victory.

Chase Carpenter led Valley City with 22 points, including the 1000th of his career during the game. Jared Lentz added 13 and Denholm scored 12. Valley City’s boys drop to 5-14 overall and 2-14 in the EDC. They will be the No. 10 seed for the postseason and go to Devils Lake for a play-in game this weekend. Devils Lake is the one EDC team Valley City beat this season.

That play-in game is tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
