N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers say it was three separate crashes involving 10 vehicles that caused a near five-hour shutdown of Interstate 94 from Jamestown to Valley City on Monday.

Six semis were involved. Troopers say vehicles were crashing into eachother because drivers simply could not see in white-out conditions. Other drivers hit the ditch as they tried to avoid vehicles that were stopped on the interstate or that had crashed into eachother.

In one incident, an out-of-state driver went around a ‘Road Closed’ barricade near Jamestown and collided with a wrecked semi that was in the passing lane.

Overall, five people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries but have since been released. The accidents remain under investigation by the NDHP.

In addition to I-94, Highway 46 south of Jamestown also had to be shut down for about two hours Monday evening so that tow trucks could removed a couple of jack-knifed semis.
