Richard “Dick” Johnson, age 68, of Dazey, ND died Sunday Feb. 17th at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley city, ND. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Friday Feb. 22nd at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home in Valley City with Rev. Foster Beckstrand officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM Thursday and one hour prior to services on Friday. Interment will be in the Dazey Cemetery later in the spring. Military honors will be rendered at the time of burial.
Richard “Dick” Johnson was born May 4, 1944 in Ortonville, MN the son of Walter and Astrid (Larson) Johnson. He grew up at Graceville, MN and graduated from high school there. He enlisted in the US Army and following his discharge in 1969 was employed as a farm worker in the Devils Lake area. It was during this time that he met Darlene Tharaldson. The couple was united in marriage at Dazey, ND on Aug. 16, 1969. They made their home at Devils Lake and Jamestown and in 1974 he began a career as an over the road truck driver. They lived in various places but returned to Dazey, ND in 1979 to raise their family. Dick was a member of Our Saviour’s Church in Dazey and also a member of the Lovaas-Sad American Legion Post. In 2011 he retired from driving but continued to work part-time at local farms in the area.
Dick is survived by his wife, Darlene, 3 children: Allen (Lorri) Johnson, Fargo, ND, Robert (Stephanie) Johnson, Lisbon, ND, and Jody (Daryl) Kunze, Dazey, ND; 7 grandchildren, Samantha, Bobby, Collin, Olivia, Presley, and Michael Johnson, and Addison Kunze; 2 sisters, Gloria Linkert, Minneapolis, MN and Ginger Harley, Glendora, CA; and 2 brothers, Chuck (Carol) Guse, St. Paul, MN and Tom (Jean) Johnson, Black Canyon City, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents.
