CITY (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City and Jamestown both put two wrestlers into the semifinals of the Class A State Wrestling Tournament at the Fargodome.
Valley City’s Shane Undem (145 pounds) won by pin in the first round Thursday afternoon and then in the quarterfinals Thursday night he beat Tate Hoffman of Bismarck in a 12-6 decision. Undem is seeded No. 4 and will wrestle top seed Cody Haugen of Minot in the semifinals Friday night.
Zach Doty (170 pounds) opened his run for the Hi-Liners with a 16-1 tech fall, and then in the quarterfinals beat Markus Noeske of Williston in a 9-6 decision. Doty is seeded No. 3 and takes on No. 2 seed Landon Schmidt of Bismarck Century in the quarterfinals.
Valley City’s Steven Horner (285), Jordan Magnuson (182) and Mark Miller (132) all won their first round matches before losing in the quarterfinals. They’ll be in the wrestle-back Friday morning along with eight other Hi-Liners that lost in the first round.
For Jamestown, defending state champion Zane Braun led the way on the first day of wrestling. Top seed Braun (152 pounds) pinned his first two opponents in a total of 1:53 to advance to Friday night’s semifinals. He’ll take on No. 4 seed Adam Stein of Mandan.
Jaden Horsted (132) also picked up two victories for Jamestown on Thursday, winning by injury default in his first match and then picking up a 6-2 decision over Michael Bell of Fargo South in the quarterfinals. Horstd is seeded No. 3 and wrestles Curt Zachmeier of Mandan in the quarterfinals.
Paxton Mewes (113) and Kyle Anderson (220) won first round matches for Jamestown before losing in the quarterfinals. They join five other Jamestown wrestlers in the wrestle-back on Friday.
